It is a sad, but a daily experience, that the animals in eastern and southern European countries still have a very low status.
Reports of the systematic killing of strays, the misery of dogs kept chained, the painful death of dogs and cats that have been poisoned, beaten to death or driven over are shocking facts that no one who believes in animal welfare can or may close their eyes to.
For many years, the Bund gegen Missbrauch der Tiere (bmt - Coalition Against the Abuse of Animals) has been very active in eastern Europe, both in terms of personnel and financially.

A simple solution for a difficult topic – that is more easily said than done. This is the experience that Nina Ruge had when she started to deal with the topic of so-called “street dogs” (strays) in southern and eastern European countries. Hundreds of thousands of animals are homeless there and often lead wretched lives. At first sight, animal lovers like Nina Ruge think the solution is easy: the dogs need help, they need attention, a new home. A second look, as the “Ambassador of the dogs” has to admit, shows that finding a solution is a long and much more difficult process.
